It’s easy to get lost in the amazingness of the island’s back side and then have to wade back to the shore with family members on your shoulders. It’s a beautiful little circular jaunt around the island, invariably including gentle warnings to tourists that they keep an eye on the incoming tide, as it tends to creep back up silently and surprisingly. Since 1996, Island Thyme has been creating botanically-based skin and body care products in small batches from our farm and apothecary workshop on Orcas. Normally surrounded by water, it becomes accessible via a “tombolo” – a raised trail that is uncovered by ebbing water. The visiting soccer team was sent all the way back home to the mainland, and local sports practices were cancelled. By the time school was over and games and practices were about to begin, the amount of particulates in the air was deemed too high. One of the best ways to make the most of an ultra-low daytime tide is walking out to Indian Island, right off Eastsound. Yesterday afternoon the smoke came rolling in. Weekend before last, Santa arrived at the Deer Harbor dock to a hoard of happy onlookers of all ages. ![]()
